The 49ers’ free agency signing Javon Hargrave bumped into Peter King appeared in the original Bay Area Sports NBC
The 49ers surprised the NFL world when they did The star signed defensive lineman Javon Hargrave to a lucrative contract this off-season.
Hargrave was one of the most sought-after free agents, coming off a season that saw him record 11 sacks and a 12.5% pressure average, per Pro Football Focus.
Among those stunned by the move was NBC Sports’ Peter King, who sat in with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Mayocco on the latest episode of “49ers Talk.”
“I was shocked when I saw it,” King told Mayoko. “I thought he was the best player in free agency, period, on both sides of the ball.
“John Lynch told me an interesting story. This wasn’t a year where the Niners were supposed to make a big signing. This is the year they spent a lot of money, and because they’ve got the two contracts they need to get the job done, I think they thought going into free agency that they’d They will sit on it.
“(Lynch) and Kyle Shanahan sat down, thought about it, kept looking at Hargrave, and they kept saying ‘Oh my God, this guy, he’s great.'”
While Lynch and Shanahan are sold on the idea of making a great addition to their defensive front, the move still needs royal approval to make it happen. King explained how Lynch arranged an impromptu meeting at his home with owner Jed York, where he made his case for adding Hargrave to an already solid defense.
“Lynch told me that within three minutes he was on board with Good York with again breaking the bank for another player,” King said. “I think it’s nice to have the support of ownership, and the fact that the owner has confidence in the general manager and head coach.
“I applaud them because they basically said this is the guy we want, and we’re going to go after him.”

It remains to be seen what kind of impact Hargrave will have on a defense that has finished as a top-five unit in each of the past four seasons. Still, the synchronization between Lynch, Shanahan, and York clearly indicates a firm commitment to maximizing the 49ers’ Super Bowl rivalry window.
